Our take on Perplexity

The tool to reach for when you need an answer you can actually check, not just one that sounds confident.

Best for

Research, fact-checking, and any task where a verifiable, cited answer matters more than creative flair.

Not ideal for

Creative writing or original code generation, where a general-purpose chatbot will serve you better.

What it's like to actually use it

Perplexity's whole pitch is trust. Rather than generating an answer from memory the way a typical chatbot does, it searches the live web and news, academic sources, and even specific platforms like Reddit or YouTube, then builds its answer around what it finds, with a citation next to each claim.

In our testing, that citation habit made a real difference on anything time-sensitive or fact-heavy — checking a statistic, confirming a recent event, or tracking down the original source behind a claim we'd seen elsewhere. Being able to click straight through to the source saved real verification time.

Pro Search, available on the paid tier, adds a small but useful step: before diving into a complex question, it asks a clarifying question or two, which noticeably improved how relevant the final answer was compared to firing off a vague query and hoping for the best.

It's worth being clear about what Perplexity isn't. It's not a creative writing tool and it's not a coding assistant — ask it to draft a story or debug a function and you'll get a serviceable but unremarkable result. It's built for one job, finding and summarising information you can verify, and it does that job better than any general chatbot we tested.

Pros and cons

What we liked
  • Every answer includes inline citations you can actually verify
  • Pro Search asks clarifying questions before researching, which improves relevance
  • Can search academic papers, news, and specific domains, not just general web results
What held it back
  • Not built for creative writing or code generation
  • Answers lean toward summarising existing sources rather than original analysis
  • Citation quality varies — a strong source can appear alongside a weaker one
Toolgenic's take

Perplexity's 8.8 reflects a tool that knows exactly what it's for. If your work involves fact-checking, research, or anything where you need to show your sources, it's the most trustworthy option on this list — just don't expect it to double as your writing or coding tool.
